Stormwater Pollution
Storm drains in Westlake drain directly into a pond, lake, creek, or river. Please consider this before discharging anything into your neighborhood storm drains.
POLLUTANT TYPE | WHY IT IS DANGEROUS | WHAT YOU CAN DO |
---|---|---|
Household Hazardous Waste | Paint and solvents can poison aquatic life as they are carried out to rivers and the ocean. | Store and label items like cleaning supplies, gasoline, and batteries properly and out of flood-prone areas to avoid leaks, spills, and contamination. Clean up spills immediately and dispose of them properly. |
Landscaping Debris | Too many leaves and grass clippings can remove oxygen from water and suffocate aquatic plants and animals. | Landscaping debris such as leaves, grass clippings, and sediment should be recycled, composted, or disposed of properly. They should not be hosed, swept, or blown into a storm drain or the street. |
Pesticides, Fertilizers, and Herbicides | Excess fertilizers and pesticides applied to lawns, gardens, and farms eventually wash off and pollute stormwater. These pesticides can have toxic effects. | Pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides should be used wisely. Use only when other methods fail, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid application if rain is in the forecast. |
Swimming Pool Chemicals | Chemicals like chlorine can harm insects, plants, and animals that rely on clean water. | Before draining your pool, use a pool test kit to ensure the water is free of algaecides, the pH falls between 6 & 8, and the pool water has no chlorine in it. |
Trash and Litter | The trash you throw on the ground is often carried off by stormwater and ends up clogging drains and canals. | Keep your property and surrounding area clear of trash and litter. Throw all litter and trash in its appropriate trash receptacle. |
Pet Waste | When pet waste is left in the yard or on the street, it can be washed into storm drains. Pet waste often ends up causing pollution problems including bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can threaten the health of humans and other wildlife. | When walking your pets, bring a bag, pick it up, and dispose of it properly. |
